Artist Statement
My work visualizes a desire to find order in chaos, and celebrates the influential power of both extremes. I use architectural drafting tools and design methods to create an underlying grid in my paintings and drawings. Then, I apply layers of paint and charcoal to interrupt that structure and build a more active atmosphere. This dynamic environment eventually overpowers the order that originally existed on the canvas, so I revisit the drafting tools and methods to tame it again. The repetitive layering of rigidity and painterly marks embodies a desperate search for Utopia in a world burdened with destruction. My painting process offers a personal revelation about art as it differs from my design background: The domains I construct mimic my attempts to destroy and repair the world around me until I discover Utopia.
